Let’s Meet Our Shepherds:
Elton (Tex) and Ruth Blenden came forward in September of 2006 expressing their intention of being active members of the Somerset Church of Christ. For the past 33 years, we had worshiped with the Richland Congregation. It was our desire to work with this congregation to spread the Gospel in this area. God has been good to us over the past few years, not because of the Blendens, but because of the loving, caring, and the sincere desire of his family worshiping here. Much has changed, God has blessed us with the growth as individuals, and numerically. The men have started to lead, something we learned by watching Godly women of this congregation do and had been doing for years. God wants workers in His Kingdom, and with His blessings and a Gospel preaching and teaching congregation, we will lovingly continue to grow. May we continue to do His work until the Lord comes.
I was born and raised in sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I am the middle child in a family of five. My parents are deceased, my older sister lives in Texas and my younger sister still lives in Fort Lauderdale. I graduated Broward Community College with an Associates Degree in Criminology. At the age of 20, I moved to Baltimore, Maryland and became a Baltimore County Police Officer. I started my law enforcement career in Patrol, soon became a Field Training Officer and ended my career in the K-9 Division. I retired a decorated Police Officer after 15 years of loyal service. I met my wife, Tes, while on the department. We have been married 20 years and have 3 children. We moved to Somerset, Pennsylvania in 1998 looking for a slower paced life. Currently, I am not only a retired Police Officer, but also a Certified Meat Cutter, (a.k.a. “Butcher Bob”) looking for a market to showcase my talents.
I have attended the Somerset Church of Christ for approximately 14 years. I participated in various aspects of the church over the years but, am probably most notable for my handling of Benevolent needs and working with our Teen Youth Group. I love any opportunity to study God’s word and pride myself on my open-door policy. I like to think that I traded in my shield to help save souls and lead as many as I can to Christ.
